Why are clinical trials important?

Treatment Discovery

Clinical trials are important for discovering new treatments for diseases, as well as new ways to detect, diagnose, and reduce the chance of developing the disease.

Builds a healthier future

Usually by the time a treatment makes it to the stage of a clinical trial, it has been found to be safe and to have some chance of being effective. In some cases, a treatment is safe and already FDA-approved and standard practice in one disease, and the clinical trial is testing it in another type of disease.

Benefits us all

Taking part in a clinical trial can have many benefits. For example, you may gain access to new treatments before they’re widely available. If a new treatment is proven to work and you’re in the group getting it, you might be among the first to benefit. You also will have the support of a team of health care providers, who will likely monitor your health closely.

The choice is yours

While clinical trials are important, the choice to participate in one is very personal and depends on your unique situation.

Why participate in a clinical trial?

There are a lot of reasons why you should participate in a clinical trial, but there are an outstanding few!

Learn More!
  • Your participation could help other people in the future with your same disease, by contributing to advancing research.
  • You could receive a treatment that is not available outside of the clinical trial. Such treatment may be safer and/or more effective than current treatment options.
  • This may increase the number of treatment options available to you.
  • You may feel more in control by taking a more active role in your health care.
  • You will likely be seeing or communicating with your healthcare team so they can monitor your condition for side effects from the new treatment.

How can my family, friends and caregivers support me?

When you are diagnosed with a serious illness, it is difficult for family, friends and caregivers to know what they can do to help. There are a number of ways they can support you so that you can get the most out of your treatment.

Learn More!
  • Help you understand the clinical trial: keep appointments and take notes, discuss the consent form.
Going to appointments: help you decide if participation in the study will be possible.
  • Finances: help you manage your money to decide if participation in the study will be possible, provide financial support, or help you find out if you are eligible for any benefits or if you can receive compensation for travel.
  • Take care of children during treatments, or check that everything is going well at home if you are in the hospital for a long period.
  • Help you with shopping/cooking/cleaning/personal care if you are not well enough to perform these tasks yourself.
  • Help you take your medications.
  • Help you deal with any side effects – cook simpler/frugal meals, make sure your room is suitable for sleeping.
